Off-roading in Aruba

If you were to ask me for my favorite Caribbean Island, I would answer, without a doubt, ARUBA!

Top 5 things about Aruba:

1.       You cannot get lost. Aruba is approximately 20 miles (32 km) long and 6 miles (10 km) across at its widest point. Most of the roads are on the Southwest Coast as that’s the nice beaches side. On the Northeast side, the coast is mostly rocky and dangerous. However, on the that side, you are able to drive wherever your vehicle can safely go. I rented a Jeep for the week, so I was able to explore all over the island. Only once did I misunderstand a road sign and went the wrong way down a one-way

street, but quickly figured it out to turn around. Otherwise, driving in Aruba is easy.

2.       Sunrise and sunset photographer’s dream. Because of the small width of the island and its orientation, you can easily see the sunrise and sunset every day. It doesn’t rain much, so the sun is pretty reliable. I’ll admit that for sunrise, since you have to drive on the roadless, sandy areas in the dark to be prepared for the dawn, it may be a little eerie when it’s just you and maybe one other vehicle in sight, but the scenery definitely rewards your efforts!

3.       Beaches and Beaches. The coastline is perfect, especially on the Southwest side. The transition from sand to sea tends to be sloped just so you can wade in as far as you want without suddenly going under. The waves tend to be mild unless you choose the beaches that advertise wind surfing. The water is clear and warm. The sun shines on you. It’s just paradise! Plus, for those that still prefer pools, most of the hotels and resorts have multiple pools and lounge areas.

4.       Food. For the first time in my life, I went to dining experience that was truly a night to remember. It was at 2 Fools and a Bull (2 Fools And A Bull) where there was limited seating, a pre-set menu, but they presented and described each of the 5 ½ courses with style. The food was amazing and afterwards, you had a chance to sit on the back patio with the chef to talk about whatever was on your mind. Reservations are required and tend to sell out ahead of time, so book early!

5.       Safe. With tourism being the primary industry, safety is a top priority for islanders. As mentioned, I ventured out and about the island all day every day; well, at least when I wasn’t lounging at an adult only pool area. Since I travel solo, feeling safe and free is one of my top priorities when I am picking a destination.

Bonus: Direct flights from lots of places. While I know my way around airports, I absolutely dread layovers. The stress and anxiety of possibly missing the connecting flight results in my having 2+ hour layovers to ease my nerves, so I can get a non-stop flight, especially to start a vacation, I’m all in! Their website boasts, “over 100 direct flights every week from 14 North American gateways.” And it’s closer than you think! Getting to Aruba from the east side of the US and Canada is a lot easier than flying to Hawaii!

For these reasons, I highly recommend adding Aruba as your next vacation destination.
